Broccoli Is An Amazing Vegetable

Food is one of the best medicines that we have at our disposal and one of the best is Broccoli. It has been shown that it is one of nature’s most valuable health promoting foods and is capable of preventing a number of health problems.
It is believed that it can help or contrbute to lowering blood pressure, reduce or remove allergies, help control Diabetes, relieve or keep at bay Osteoarthritis and has beneficial effects vis-a-vis cancer.
Concerning Osteoarthritis, The University of East Anglia has found encouraging results about Broccoli. The compound Sulforaphane is found in Broccoli and in testing cells and mice they found that it stops a destructive enzyme that damages cartilage. Sulforaphane can also be found in brussel sprouts, cauliflower and cabbage. Apparently it has been successful in three different laboratory tests that they have tried so far and that it has been used in human and cow cartilage cells, tissue and live mice.
Broccoli and others from the Brassica family of vegetables are helping to protect your joints into the future.
Broccoli is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits.
Sulforaphane a sulphur compound has also been shown to kill cancer stem cells and therefore slows tumour growth. Some researchers believe that killing stem cells may be key to controlling cancer. Glucoraphanin is found in broccoli as well as Sulforaphane. Glucoraphanin boosts cell enzymes that protect you from molecular damage from cancer-causing chemicals. The Sulforaphane from Broccoli activates about 200 different genes. Broccoli contains ingredients to switch on genes that prevent cancer development and switch off other ones that help it spread.
You don’t need to consume loads of Broccoli to achieve these benefits. A study in 2008 found that just four servings of Broccoli per week could protect men from Prostate Cancer.
Sulforaphane has an effect on Breast Cancer cells as well as Prostate Cancer. These results were achieved in the laboratory. It seems that Sulforaphane works on detoxification enzymes that try to protect the cancer cells.
The fresher the Broccoli the better as with other vegetables they lose their goodness gradually after they are picked.
Did you know that you can eat the stem of the Broccoli, all you do is trim off the outer tough part, slice it and cook it with the rest of the Broccoli.
Eat at least five fruit and vegetables a day – ideally it should be more but five is a good start.
If the claims above are true it would be really great and even if they aren’t Broccoli is enjoyable to eat.
