Cinnamon Has Certain Health Benefits

Cinnamon has been considered for a number of years to be another food that can provide health benefits.
- One being that it can prevent spikes in blood sugar, which then improves insulin take up for your cells.
- Amy Stockert associate professor of biochemistry at Ohio Northern University has been studying cinnamon for a while now. In 2012 she showed that type 2 diabetics who took daily cinnamon supplements saw bigger reductions in blood sugar than those who took a placebo. These improvements lasted even after the participants stopped taking the supplements.
- Further research by Stockert thinks that cinnamon is acting on a protein that affects lipid metabolism and cell growth changes. This suggests that it could be possibly linked to anti-aging and antioxidant control.
- Stockert thinks just small quantities used in cooking and seasoning could have benefits.
- Other studies have found that cinnamon can boost metabolism in mice and human fat cells. In the journal “Metabolism” researchers from University of Michigan tested cinnamaldehyde the essential oil that gives cinnamon its flavour. They found that cinnamon oil in mice and humans started to burn calories through thermogenesis.
- It is not fully proven but there are strong suggestions that there are some benefits in using/taking cinnamon for health.
- Not only people with type 2 diabetes can benefit from taking cinnamon but it looks as though we all could benefit.
- Cinnamon can also improve the taste of some recipes.
- Some people drink cinnamon tea and really enjoy it.
Someone who has liver problems should talk to their doctor before taking supplements of cinnamon or adding too much to their food.
